Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a technology that allows you to remotely control and interact with a Windows server from another computer. This can be useful for troubleshooting, managing, or simply accessing files and applications on your server.

This comprehensive guide delves into the process of connecting to your Windows VPS or dedicated server hosted by Server Gigabit using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) from a diverse range of operating systems. It encompasses establishing RDP connections from desktop operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and macOS, as well as mobile devices running Android or iOS.

Connecting via RDP from Windows

Windows 7
  1. Click the “Start” button on the taskbar and search for “Remote Desktop Connection.”
Windows 8/10
  1. Click the “Windows” icon on the taskbar and search for “Remote Desktop Connection.”

  2. The RDP client will launch.

  3. Enter the hostname of your server.

  4. Click “Connect.”

  5. The RDP session will automatically establish within a few seconds.

  6. You will be prompted to enter the credentials for your Windows Server.

  7. Your Server Gigabit username can be found in the Customer Control Panel, section VPS, VDS, or Server control. The default username for Windows Server is Administrator. If you are unsure about your password, you can reset it in the Customer Control Panel.

Optional RDP Settings
  1. Click the “Show Options” button to access additional settings.

  2. Adjust the screen resolution using the slider.

  3. To enable audio playback on your local PC, select “Play on this computer” under “Remote audio playback.”

  4. To make your local printer available on your server, check the “Printer” box under “Local devices and resources.” Note: The printer driver must be installed on your server.

  5. The clipboard is enabled by default. Uncheck the box to disable it.

Troubleshooting RDP Connection Issues from Windows

If you are unable to connect to your Windows Server via RDP, refer to the following troubleshooting guide:

  1. Verify server response: Check if your server is responding to Ping requests. If not, try rebooting it.

  2. Check server firewall: If you are using a VPS, connect to your server through VNC to check the server and firewall settings. If you are using a dedicated server, contact Server Gigabit for assistance.

  3. Resolve license issues: If you encounter the “Remote Desktop can’t connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons” error, it indicates a lack of active Remote Desktop Services licenses. You can either delete the terminal service or the affected Windows Registry key.

  4. Reboot server: After making changes, reboot your server to apply them.

Connecting via RDP from Linux

Establish an RDP connection from your Linux system to your Windows server using the “rdesktop” command-line tool.

Installation
  1. Install rdesktop using the following command:
sudo apt-get install rdesktop
Starting the RDP Connection
  1. Launch the RDP connection using the following command:
rdesktop <IP address>

  1. Enter your Windows Server login credentials.

  2. Your Server Gigabit username can be found in the Customer Control Panel, section VPS, VDS, or Server control. The default username for Linux servers is root.

Important Notes
  1. Your Linux system must have an X11 server installed to establish an RDP connection.

  2. Connecting via SSH is not recommended for RDP connections.

  3. Alternatively, consider using the ‘freeRDP’ program instead of ‘rdesktop’.

Connecting via RDP from macOS

  2. Launch the RDP client and enter your Windows Server login credentials.

  3. In the “Domain:” field, enter either the server’s IP address or hostname.

  4. Always use the latest RDP client version to avoid connection issues.

Troubleshooting RDP Connection Issues from macOS

If you encounter the “Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify the identity of the computer that you want to connect to” error, ensure you are using the latest RDP client version.

Connecting via RDP from Android

  1. Install the latest RDP client from the Google Play Store.

  2. Launch the RDP client and enter your Windows Server login credentials.
